About the Add Page Numbers tool

Page numbers make long documents easy to navigate, discuss and print. Reviewers can say “see page 14”, printed pages can be put back in order if they are dropped, and many universities and courts require numbered submissions. Adding them by hand in an editor is tedious, and often you do not have the original Word file at all — just the PDF.

This tool stamps numbers directly onto your existing PDF. You choose one of six positions, a format such as “Page 3 of 20”, the starting number, the size and the colour. If your document has a cover page, tick one box to leave it unnumbered and start counting on the next page.

How to add page numbers to a PDF

    1. Select the PDF you want to number.
    2. Pick a position and a number format.
    3. Set the starting number, font size and colour, and choose whether to skip the cover page.
    4. Click Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

    When is it useful?

Add page numbers to theses and dissertations, legal bundles, board packs, e-books, manuals and merged reports. A typical workflow is to combine several documents with Merge PDF and then number the final file so the pagination runs continuously from start to finish.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any starting number. This is helpful when the PDF continues from a previous chapter.

Can I leave the first page without a number?

Yes. Tick “Don't number the first page” and numbering will begin on page two.

Will the numbers cover my content?

Numbers are placed about 1 cm from the page edge, which sits in the margin of most documents. Choose a different position if your pages have content near the edge.

    Which fonts are used?

Numbers use Helvetica, a clean standard PDF font that displays correctly on every device.
